Fishing Rules in Malaysia: What to Check Before You Go

Do not assume one general fishing licence applies at every fishing location in Malaysia. Requirements can vary by location, type of water, responsible authority and whether you fish from shore or aboard a boat. Paid ponds and private jetties may also set their own entry, fee, fishing-method and catch rules.

If you board a boat or vessel, ask the operator about its approvals and passenger safety; vessel requirements are separate from permission for an angler to fish. For rivers, lakes, reservoirs or protected areas, confirm the rules with the site manager or relevant authority.
